Empowerment Jam Sessions

An inclusive music-making opportunity hosted in a casual and relaxed venue.

Music Jams have a long tradition from jazz to rock! Empowerment Jams by The Musical Autist gather people together to encourage musical expression. They are an inclusive experience bringing neurodivergent and neurotypical musicians together to enjoy the art of music making.  People who do not formally play instruments are welcomed and encouraged to participate alongside trained musicians in this empowering event.  Simple percussion instruments, such as rhythm sticks, shaker eggs, and tambourines will be made available for participants who are not musically trained.

Participants will join the Jam leader in a loose framework of songs, starting with a welcome song and an empowerment chant. Musicians are encouraged to share a favorite song or melody with the group. When invited by the Jam leader, musicians also might choose to add percussion to another musician’s song or accompany the song leader in playing music. The Jam leader will play a variety of songs ranging from a 12-bar blues, drumming rhythms, and even performing pop songs and show tunes. The Jam will close with a farewell song to signal that the event is ending.

Musicians are encouraged to bring and play their acoustic instruments during the Jam. (No electrical instruments, please.)  All ages and musical abilities are welcome.

Jam sessions are free to the public and last one hour.
